7 of Our Favorite Spots to Enjoy Fall in Western North Carolina (in Haikus)

By Angie Robinson • October 22, 2021

Do you like hiking

Or perhaps you like biking

Maybe it’s fishing?

We live in one of the most beautiful spots on the east coast, and fall in Western North Carolina is peak tourist season– and for good reason! The changing colors of the leaves light up the mountains in breathtaking yellows, golds, and reds. No matter your preference, whether it be hiking, biking, fishing, or paddling, our team has crafted a series of haikus to share our favorite spots for enjoying fall in the mountains of WNC.

Before we start, we want to acknowledge, with respect, that the land we work and recreate on today is the ancestral land of the ᏣᎳᎫᏪᏘᏱ Tsalaguwetiyi more commonly known as the Cherokee. We recognize the Cherokee as the native people and original stewards of this land and that we need to listen and learn from the people of this land. The places we’ve listed below are all on these lands except when acknowledged otherwise.

Lysianne – Rock Climbing at Rumbling Bald

*On ᏣᎳᎫᏪᏘᏱ Tsalaguwetiyi (Cherokee, East) and Catawba ancestral land

I meandered through

Boulder fields and cliffs galore

A day spent climbing

Dan – Art Loeb Trail

30 miles total

Hiked in two days; are the views

Worth the suffering?

Coral – French Broad River

The French Broad River

At the dawn of a new day

Fills my heart with joy

view of a lake through trees with orange and yellow leaves in the distance

Suz – Great Smoky Mountains near Nantahala and Fontana Lake

Hoodie season’s here

No bugs, no poison ivy

Fall hikes crush the rest

Angie – Greene Mountain Loop

He said “It’s a trail”

As we got lost in the woods

But I knew better

Mandy
My secret fall spot
I will never ever share
Get your own, black bear

Cory – Yellowstone Prong, Graveyard Fields area

That water is cold

Can’t beat the Yellowstone Prong

Castin’ and chillin’
