FROM THE SALT PALACE TO THE WASATCH RANGE

August 13, 2015

Here we are, another Summer Outdoor Retailer has now come and gone. The Darby Comm crew has been attending the Outdoor Retailer show for over ten years, but this year’s show included a very impressive first for all of us. Typically, we spend long days inside the Salt Palace Convention Center, and only get to venture outside at night for client parties and dinners. Rarely do we ever get to enjoy the special qualities that led to Salt Lake City being chosen as the location of Outdoor Retailer.

Surrounded by the Wasatch Range and the Salt Lake that gives the city its name, Salt Lake City is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. So this year, we decided to do something different and take advantage of the Western Mountains that are so different than our familiar Appalachian Mountains. Before OR Day 1, we hosted a pre-show event with some of our favorite media friends and enjoyed the scenic beauty that the surrounding areas of Salt Lake City have to offer.  Alta, UT, best known for its ski resorts, offered us a scenic, fun, yet challenging excursion that reminded us why we love working in this remarkable industry.

On Monday and Tuesday of last week, we embarked on a scenic hike up a Utah mountainside, which gave us the opportunity to really use the gear we talk about all the time.  This experience really helped remind us that our love of the outdoors cannot be fulfilled just by walking the show floor - we have to get out there, get real and breathe some fresh air!  Being able to talk about our clients’ gear and spend quality time with our industry friends and delve deeper into these relationships was so important to us.  The opportunity to do so in such an incredible setting was an invaluable experience, and truly reminded us how fortunate we are to be doing our jobs in the industry that we love. Many thanks to the Alta Chamber, the fantastic staff at the Snowbird Resort, Utah Mountain Adventures, and the Alta Shuttle. We’ll see you again soon!
